Wednesday, May 14th, This Meeting has been Cancelled: We will let you know when a new meeting is rescheduled. Thanks so much to everyone who showed up.
Why is Canyon Requesting the Temporary PPD?
After speaking with D.O.T. representative Brian Gallagher and field deputy Jullian Harris-Calvin from Councilman LaBonge's office, the residents of Canyon Drive are requesting this due to an a heavy media presence (paparazzi) because of a high profile couple who own property in the area. This couple is unaware of how their name is being used to further this parking plan. They are out of the country for an extended period of time at the moment and have been in another state for the last few months fiming a movie.
In January there was a Neighborhood Counil meeting where this proposed ppd was brought up yet during the "lively discussion" no mention of any media presence was put forth by the residents of Canyon who attended.

What does this mean for the Residents not living on Canyon Dr? More congestion on the streets East and West of Canyon, yet another parking option is taken away from us. More tickets on Street Sweeping Days, etc... What can you do? Show up at the above meetings and make your voice heard. Email Councilman LaBonge, Jullian Harris-Calvin is the field deputy for the area around Canyon Drive, (a link to her email is above) or email Franklin Village and we will forward your concerns. Just because we rent doesn't mean we don't matter. |
Currently Preferential Parking Districts are under Review by the City. DOT's General Manager Rita Robinson sent a Parking Study Status Report to the City Council in December. Below is an excerpt on her conclusion. Please read the entire report here.
CONCLUSION: Whether by accident or by design, preferential parking restrictions are turning neighborhoods with public streets into what are essentially gated communities accessible only to the residents and their guests. (ed. note: Most residents on Canyon Drive have Driveways.)
Taken From PPD Rules regarding the implemtation of Temporary Preferential Districts:
The City Council may, by resolution, establish a temporary preferential parking district upon the Department's recommendation who suffer an excessive parking impact as the result of a natural disaster such as fire, flood, earthquake, or landslide; as the result of an occurrence that creates unusual media attention (ie the infamous couple who lives in the area and the paparazzi that follow them).
We have not had any major disasters here and as noted said couple is currently abroad and has been out of LA in the last few months.
As of Sept. '07 the city is not accepting Petitions at this time. It also states that the Preferential Parking Program is not intended to solve parking problems created by high density residential development, nor is it designed to reduce crime.
See you at the meetings.
